Tires in San Jose, CA

New tires from every major brand, ordered for your car and installed here, with a written quote before we order.

Tires for the rainy season

San Jose's rain comes in a short season: about 82 percent of the year's rain falls from November through March, according to the National Weather Service. After months of dry roads, the first storms bring slick pavement, and that is when worn tires show it. AAA's 2018 testing found that tires worn to 4/32 inch took 87 feet longer to stop on wet pavement than new tires and lost about a third of their handling ability on a passenger car. AAA recommends replacing tires at 4/32 inch, well before the 2/32 inch point at which NHTSA says a tire is no longer safe.

How to check your tread

  • The penny test. Put a penny into the tread with Lincoln's head upside down and facing you. If you can see the top of his head, the tread is at 2/32 inch or less and the tire should be replaced.
  • The wear bars. Most tires have raised bars across the grooves. When the tread is flush with them, the tire is done.
  • Uneven wear. Look at the inside and outside edges, not just the center. Wear on one edge usually points to alignment.

The tires we sell

We sell and install new tires from every major brand, ordered to fit your car, including Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear, Pirelli, Yokohama, Toyo and Hankook. Tell us how you drive, whether that is a daily commute, long highway trips or mostly around town, and we will recommend options at different price points in the size and load rating your carmaker specifies.

What we do

You get a written quote for the tires and installation before we order. When the tires arrive, we mount and balance them and set the pressure to your carmaker's specification. We also recommend an alignment check, because a misaligned car can start wearing a new set unevenly right away, and we do alignments in our own shop.

Bringing your own tires

If you bought tires somewhere else, we can install them. Installing customer-supplied tires is priced separately, so call for a quote.

What it costs

Tire prices depend on the brand, the size and your car, so we quote them in writing before we order. California charges a tire fee of $1.75 per new tire by state law. See our current specials.

The fine print

  • Tire warranties, including tread life and road hazard coverage, come from the tire maker and follow its terms.
  • Availability and delivery time depend on the brand and size.
  • For customer-supplied tires, we are not responsible for their age, condition or defects.

Questions we hear every week.

When should I replace my tires?

AAA recommends replacing tires at 4/32 inch of tread, because its 2018 testing found wet stopping distances already much longer at that depth. NHTSA says a tire is no longer safe at 2/32 inch. In San Jose's rainy season, the earlier number is the safer one.

How do I do the penny test?

Put a penny into the tread with Lincoln's head upside down and facing you. If you can see the top of his head, the tread is at 2/32 inch or less and the tire should be replaced. Check a few spots on each tire, including the edges.

What tire brands do you sell?

Every major brand can be ordered, including Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear, Pirelli, Yokohama, Toyo and Hankook. We recommend options at different price points in the size and load rating your carmaker specifies.

Can you install tires I bought online?

Yes. Installing customer-supplied tires is priced separately, so call for a quote. We are not responsible for the age, condition or defects of tires we did not supply.

Do I need an alignment with new tires?

It is the best time for one. A misaligned car can start wearing a new set of tires unevenly right away. We do alignments in our own shop, so it can be done when the tires go on.

Why are my tires wearing on the inside edge?

Usually alignment, most often camber or toe that is out of specification. Worn suspension parts and low tire pressure can also cause it. An alignment check finds the cause.

What is the California tire fee?

California charges $1.75 per new tire by state law. It funds tire recycling and air quality programs and is added to every new tire sold in the state.
